JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Just days after the Missouri Senate passed legislation aimed at the LGBTQ community, hundreds gathered at the Capitol to protest on behalf of trans rights. At the beginning of the January session, Republicans said it was a priority to pass legislation limiting transgender athletes. While the legislation approved by senators last week is moving forward inside the state house, people outside say this is a way for Missourians to learn more about the LGBTQ community."Part of my speech was thanking the majority party for bringing this up, because we know through our history,y that when people start talking, people start learning," Sen. Greg Razer, D-Kansas City, told the crowded gathered on the Capitol lawn. "People in Missouri are talking about trans-Missourians."Last week, the upper chambers passed two bills prohibiting doctors from performing surgeries or prescribing puberty blockers or hormone treatments to minors, and requiring transgender athletes to play on th...SoCal mountain communities bracing for more snow

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that will attempt to combat alleged gas price gouging, Wednesday. The law allows the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission to set a maximum gross gasoline refining margin, regulating the amount of profits an oil company can make from gasoline sales. The commission will also have the authority to fine companies if it finds it exceeds the gross margins.“With this legislation, we’re ending the oil industry’s days of operating in the shadows,” Newsom said in a statement Wednesday. “California took on Big Oil and won. We’re not only protecting families, we’re also loosening the vice grip Big Oil has had on our politics for the last 100 years.”SBX1-2 was presented by California Senator Nancy Skinner and was passed by the California Senate Thursday. The bill then passed the state assembly by a 58-19 vote, before heading to Newsom’s desk to sign into law.“California has sent a clear message to the ...Alameda: Missing man’s body found in harbor

By Ali Zaslav, Phil Mattingly and Manu Raju | CNNThe Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would end the national Covid-19 emergency declared by then-President Donald Trump on March 13, 2020.The final vote was overwhelmingly bipartisan, 68-23. The joint resolution, which cleared the House earlier this year, now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk. The vote comes on the heels of two other successful efforts led by Republicans in approving legislation rescinding Biden administration policies.A White House official said in a statement to CNN that while the President “strongly opposes” this bill, the administration is already winding down the emergency by May 11, the date previously announced for the end of the authority.Still, the official noted, if the Senate passed the measure and it heads to Biden’s desk, “he will sign it, and the administration will continue working with agencies to wind down the national emergency with as much notice as possible to Am...7 CHP officers charged in death of man in their custody

By Stefanie Dazio | Associated PressLOS ANGELES — Prosecutors charged seven California Highway Patrol officers and a nurse with involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday in connection with the 2020 death of a man who screamed “I can’t breathe” while multiple officers restrained him as they tried to take a blood sample.Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced the charges in the death of Edward Bronstein, which the LA County coroner said was caused by “acute methamphetamine intoxication during restraint by law enforcement.”“The officers had a legal duty to Mr. Bronstein,” Gascón said during a news conference. “He was in their custody. We believe that they failed their duty and their failure was criminally negligent, causing his death.”Bronstein, 38, was taken into custody following a traffic stop on suspicion of driving under the influence on March 31, 2020. In California, calls for reparations are getting louder: A state task force just released an $800 billion estimate for reparations for Black state residents, while earlier this month, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors expressed support for $5 million payments to every eligible Black adult in the county. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday supplied a fresh victory for advocates of the growing movement to compensate Black people for generations of systemic racism, with the board voting unanimously to create a committee that will study reparations for Black residents. But the meeting also provided a look at just how ugly this fight could get.Although all four supervisors offered support for the study, the level of vitriol expressed against the very concept of reparations showed that, at least in corners of the mostly blue Alameda County, the issue is deeply divisive.Although a majority of residents stood in support of the measure, a vocal minority was vehement...Kareem Abdul-Jabbar visits Oakland HS state championship basketball teams
