Avs coach Jared Bednar says a “little mental break” could be good for goalie Alexandar Georgiev

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:57:05 GMT

The Colorado Avalanche began this season with a desire to play Alexandar Georgiev a little less after he carried so much of the workload near the end of last season, but the early-season schedule has allowed him to play every game so far. That streak of eight straight starts will end Wednesday night when the Avs welcome the St. Louis Blues to Ball Arena. Ivan Prosvetov, acquired on waivers just before the regular season began, is going to make his first start.Georgiev began the season with six straight wins, and still leads the NHL in that category. The Avs have dropped back-to-back games without scoring a goal, but the coaching staff saw a chance to finally give their No. 1 goalie a break.“We’ve discussed it over the last few starts, especially,” Bednar said after practice Tuesday. “At 6-0, you’re kinda like, ‘Well, this isn’t that taxing of a schedule.’ Then you get the extra day in Buffalo. But now I think his last two games probably...

By Kevin Freking and Stephen Groves | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Rep. George Santos easily survived a vote Wednesday to expel him from the House as most Republicans and 31 Democrats opted to withhold punishment while both his criminal trial and a House Ethics Committee investigation proceed. The effort to kick Santos out of the House was led by his fellow New York Republicans, who are anxious to distance themselves from a colleague infamous for fabricating his life story and accused of stealing from donors, lying to Congress and receiving unemployment benefits he did not deserve. But the resolution failed to gain the required two-thirds vote. Supporters could not even gain a simple majority, with the final vote being 179 for expulsion and 213 against. To succeed, numerous Republican lawmakers would have had to break ranks with newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson, who has said Santos should get his day in court. Johnson, R-La., also recently told Fox News that if Congress is going to e...

By Farnoush Amiri | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The House late Wednesday rejected an effort to censure Democratic Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, scrapping a Republican attempt to condemn the only Palestinian-American in Congress over her recent rhetoric around the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.A measure to move forward with a censure resolution of Tlaib, a punishment one step below expulsion from the House, was dismissed with broad bipartisan support as both parties raised concerns about violating First Amendment rights.A Democratic effort to in turn censure Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California as speaker. The agenda of retribution reflects the growing divisiveness of the House, where severe forms of punishment that had long been viewed as an option of l...
